Balena Etcher won't work unless launched with sudo

For some reason my Balena Etcher recently stopped imaging disks. The program would load and act normal but when I tried to actually image an SD card it would briefly flicker something and then act as if it had completed the task but no files were written. There are a lot of tips online that mention polkit and google-chrome-desktop but none work so I just open a terminal and run the AppImage with sudo at launch (rather than having it prompt me at the write operation step). This seems to work.
