Open Source gateway VPN performance
I was curious how various open source gateway VPNs performed. I set up a test server running Debian Buster and a test device running Android 11. Each setup was tested 5 times using Fast.com and averaged. Note: the test server was a tiny, wimpy machine so focus on the relative differences between them rather than the actual value. Higher is better:
- No VPN: 176 Mbps (baseline)
- OpenConnect ocserv: 100 Mbps
- Tailscale: 78.2 Mbps
- dsnet: 62.6 Mbps
- ZeroTier: 20.8 Mbps
Not tested:
- n2n: couldn't set route on Android and app wasn't supporting latest protocol; also iOS app appears to be abandoned
- Peer-to-Peer VPN from badvpn: splintered community so unclear which is latest (ambrop72, coversocks, shadowsocks, ... ?), unofficial Android app has ads, and iOS currently unsupported
