AVIF for the win!

The world has long awaited an image successor to GIF and JPEG.  So many have tried and failed that it's easy to give up hope but a new entrant shows strong potential: AVIF, a frame-based derivative of the popular AV1 video format that has taken the Internet by storm.  It has a long way to go to unseat the undefeated challengers, but worth keeping an eye on.
