Weird CPU hang on old laptop when installing Linux

I had a weird error this week when installing Lubuntu on a really old Gateway laptop:

Watchdog detected hard LOCKUP on cpu 0


After a bit of troubleshooting and trial and error, I found the fix by disabling ACPI.
